The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is mandatory for any person or business entity in India engaged in the import or export of goods and services. The IEC serves as a unique identification number and is required for customs clearance while importing or exporting goods or services from India. It is a one-time registration and does not require renewal unless any changes are made to the details provided during registration. The IEC facilitates international trade transactions and is essential for availing various benefits and concessions offered by the government for import-export activities.
